Getachew Alemkere

Senior Technical Advisor

Getachew is a senior pharmacist with specific training and practical experience in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including infectious disease (ID) management and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). He also has ample experience in research and surveys. Getachew designed and piloted the first hospital AMS program, in 2015, at Tikur Anbessa Hospital as part of his MSc study. This work laid the foundation for the consecutive research and surveys related to AMR and ID in the hospital. His work has since primarily focused on ID management, AMR, and AMS services. Because of his special attachment to this technical area, he went on to lead AMS initiatives at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital immediately after his transfer to Addis Ababa University in early 2019. In 2021, with the revised AMS governance, Getachew was also assigned as a co-chair/secretary for the AMS program. Apart from strengthening AMS and ID activities at hospitals, he participated in the provision of several training initiatives and contributed to the development of AMR-related national documents, including the recent One Health national AMR prevention and containment strategic plan (2020 to 2025). Getachew was one of the consultants who revised the recent Standard Treatment Guidelines, contributing specifically to the infectious disease management section and the new AMR chapter.

He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc degree in pharmacy practice.
