Before joining MTaPS as Country Director for Rwanda, John Patrick Mwesigye worked as Senior Health Officer at the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, Head of Pharmaceutical Policy and Medicines Regulatory Services at the Ministry of Health, Republic of Rwanda, and Chair of the National Pharmaceutical Establishments Committee. Among other experiences, John Patrick also worked as an inspector of pharmaceutical establishments in the Republic of Rwanda. During his tenure at the Rwanda Ministry of Health, he implemented activities supported by the Global Fund and Management Sciences for Health and MTaPS predecessor program, Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS).
John Patrick is a member of several committees, including the International Conference of Drug Regulatory Authorities (ICDRA), International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), Africa Scientific Conference of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (SCoMRA), and a nominated member of the ad-hoc committee that drafted all the instruments on the establishment of African Medicines Agency (AMA). The AMA was recently endorsed by AU Heads of State and Governments in July 2019. His previous experiences include working as the chief pharmacist for Life Pharma Rwanda, one of the country’s leading medical products importers and distributors.
John Patrick received a B. Pharm degree from the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Chennai – India and a master’s degree in clinical pharmacy from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
