Implementing Antimicrobial Stewardship at a Teaching Hospital in Nigeria

In Nigeria, misuse and overuse of antibiotics is an ongoing problem, contributing to the increased emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). At the health facility level, implementing an antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) program can ensure appropriate use of antibiotics, avert inappropriate prescribing and dispensing practices, and deter self-medication. This technical highlight summarizes MTaPS efforts to introduce an AMS program at the public, state-owned Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) through an interprofessional engagement approach to AMR containment that emphasizes a shared understanding, and effective collaboration and communication among health workers.
