In 2023, the USAID MTaPS Program supported countries to include non-malaria commodities in their funding requests as part of Grant Cycle 7, according to the new Global Fund (GF) guidance. GF has adopted this new approach to their financing recognizing the value of an integrated packet of care at the community level and its added benefit for malaria case management.
MTaPS developed a quantification tool to help countries estimate their needs in non-malaria commodities and the gap that GF could potentially fund. The tool facilitates completion of the GF non-malaria iCCM gap tables required as part of the funding request to GF.
The tool is an Excel spreadsheet which enables the user to estimate the forecast and procurement requirements for amoxicillin to treat pneumonia cases, as well as for ORS and zinc sulfate to treat diarrhea cases in children 2-59 months at the community level, using the morbidity method of quantification.
This tool was developed using and building on the updated version of the reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health forecasting supplement developed by MTaPS in 2022, and provides key information such as:
- the number of cases of pneumonia and diarrhea in children 2-59 months that are expected to be treated at the community level, through the iCCM platform
- the gap of non-malaria iCCM treatment cases to be funded by GF, not covered by other sources of funding
- the corresponding quantities and estimated cost of non-malaria iCCM health commodities that should be procured to fill the gap
The tool considers wastage and additional freight and logistics costs to deliver the product to the country as well as estimated costs for distribution to the last mile.
This information is needed to be included in the funding request submitted to the GF as part of Grant Cycle 7.
